German Bundesliga news: Five reasons why Bayern Munich won the league

Bayern Munich have regained their dominance in the Bundesliga, winning 23 of their 32 league games so far this season to be crowned German champions.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern troops have banked 76 points and currently sit eight points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, with both teams having only lost two league games.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Annika Böttcher gives five reasons why it all came together for the German giants this season.

A new manager

Vincent Kompany took over Bayern Munich from Thomas Tuchel after last season.

The Belgian, who had previously suffered relegation from the Premier League with Burnley FC, wasn’t even the club’s second choice.

Some doubted him, saying he was too stubborn and inexperienced. But Kompany stayed calm in Munich’s high-pressure environment.

He managed the pressure well, handled the media with composure, and dealt firmly with dressing-room tensions, including the discontent of Leon Goretzka.

Under his guidance, Bayern Munich lost just two league matches and averaged 2.2 points per game.

Still, in Munich’s high-stakes environment, one Bundesliga title may not be enough.

Kompany will need more than a solid debut season to win over the doubters for good.

Leverkusen dropping too many points

Last year’s invincibles, Bayer Leverkusen, came crashing back to earth.

After going unbeaten in the league last season, they made a slow start to their title defence, winning just five of their first 11 matches.

By then, they were already nine points behind Bayern Munich - a gap they never managed to close.

Every time Bayern Munich slipped, such as after their 3-2 loss to Bochum, Leverkusen failed to take advantage.

Their only win over Munich came in the cup.

Dortmund and Leipzig fall away early

The usual contenders, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, never got going.

Neither side was in serious contention at any stage of the season.

Leipzig struggled in attack from the outset, with Benjamin Sesko, Lois Openda, and Xavi Simons all falling short of expectations.

A mid-season coaching change did little to spark a revival.

Dortmund, meanwhile, remained unpredictable and unsettled. A lack of consistency and problems behind the scenes saw them drift from the top early on.

Harry Kane breaks the curse

Harry Kane has finally lifted a league title.

The England striker ended his long wait for silverware, clinching the Bundesliga crown with Bayern, after Leverkusen drew 2-2 against Freiburg on Sunday.

Kane, signed last summer, delivered exactly what Bayern Munich had hoped for: 24 goals and seven assists in the current season.

After just two years in Germany, he has scored a goal against every club in the league.

His quality in front of the goal was one of the key reasons Bayern came out on top.

Michael Olise shines

But even Kane needed support, and Michael Olise provided it.

The French winger arrived from Crystal Palace for £50 million and exceeded expectations in his debut season.

Intelligent, creative, and perfectly suited to Kompany’s system, Olise registered 17 assists - a number no Bayern Munich player reached last year.

After just one season, he's already being compared to club legends Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry.
