England news: Thomas Tuchel targets World Cup glory after taking reins for Three Lions

Thomas Tuchel admitted ‘the target is to win the World Cup’ after officially taking the reins as England manager in a role that starts on January 1, 2025.

The highly-decorated German manager was unveiled to the media on Wednesday and navigated the press conference with confidence and ease.

Interim England manager Lee Carsley has not fared so well in the media limelight and will revert to his England Under-21 role when Tuchel takes charge of the senior men’s team in January.

The 51-year-old has achieved huge success and won multiple trophies at club level with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich.

And he is confident he can transfer his methods to the international arena, with England hoping to go one step further at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico - having fallen at the final hurdle in successive European Championships under Gareth Southgate.

Southgate was often accused of picking his favourite players, even if they were out of form, but Tuchel has promised his team will ‘play without ego’ - and will be made up of the ‘right group of players’, not the best individual ones.

He told a press conference: "Besides the talent, I know we have the character in the players. I can't wait to work with them from March on the pitch.

“Hopefully with all the staff at St George's Park, we will push all the players to the limit.

"The target is to win the World Cup, so I don't know if it is a failure [if we don't].

"If we miss the target then we would have to talk about why we missed it.

“It's not a gamble, but we speak it out now very clearly why we are here and what we want to achieve.

"We are not shy of it. We are absolutely open about it. It does not help the more often we speak about it, but it should be out there and then we can set the standards, values and principles, because then we have to live up to them for 18 months.

"Let's judge it when we have done it. If we decide it was a failure, then we will not continue. If we decide it was not a failure, then we will continue.

"The most important thing is to have the right group of players. We will maybe not choose the 26 best individual players, but the best group that supports each other and builds a certain atmosphere and one that can make us overperform because this is what you need to do.

"The most successful teams almost play without ego, they play as teams and this will always be the core of football. It will also be the core in our new nomination process."

Here, Sports News Blitz takes a detailed look at Tuchel's incredible career so far.

Thomas Tuchel’s career overview

Thomas Tuchel is regarded as one of the most visionary and intelligent football coaches of his generation, with a career defined by tactical brilliance, innovation, and resilience.

From humble beginnings, Tuchel has risen to the pinnacle of European football, consistently proving himself at some of the world’s most prestigious clubs.

Early Life and Playing Days

Born on August 29, 1973, in Krumbach, West Germany, Tuchel's footballing journey began as a promising defender.

However, his playing career was tragically cut short due to a knee cartilage injury, forcing his retirement at the tender age of 25.

Though his time on the pitch was brief, it is often said that this adversity shaped the fierce determination and relentless pursuit of excellence that would later define his coaching career.

The Genesis of a Coaching Career

Tuchel's coaching career began modestly but purposefully. At VfB Stuttgart (2000–2005), working with youth teams, he developed a deep understanding of the tactical and psychological aspects of the game.

His time there set the stage for his rapid ascent.

After a brief stint with FC Augsburg II (2007–2008), where he continued to hone his methods, Tuchel’s talents were unmistakably evident.

Mainz 05 (2009–2014): The Birth of a Tactical Innovator

Tuchel’s appointment as head coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2009 marked the start of his rise to prominence.

Succeeding Jurgen Klopp, he inherited a modest team but transformed them with his tactical brilliance and eye for talent.

Mainz, under Tuchel, became a model of overachievement, and his work ethic, attention to detail and ability to adapt systems to his players’ strengths saw him elevate the club far beyond expectations.

His tactical innovation, particularly his use of pressing and fluid formations, drew widespread admiration, and he guided Mainz to European qualification in 2011 - a feat that resonated across German football.

After five remarkable seasons, Tuchel left Mainz, having left an indelible mark on the club.

Borussia Dortmund (2015–2017): Shaping a Giant

In 2015, Tuchel was handed the reins of Borussia Dortmund, once again succeeding Klopp.

At Dortmund, he faced the challenge of restoring the club’s status as a European powerhouse.

His tenure was nothing short of transformative.

Tuchel instilled a more possession-based, dynamic style of play, marked by high intensity and tactical versatility.

Under his leadership, the team not only played some of the most thrilling football in Europe but also developed young talents like Ousmane Dembélé and Christian Pulisic into global stars.

The highlight of his Dortmund tenure came in 2017 when he led the team to victory in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup), securing his first major trophy.

Yet, despite this triumph, tensions with the club’s management resulted in an untimely departure, a testament to the uncompromising nature of his vision and the high standards he demanded.

Paris Saint-Germain (2018–2020): Mastering the Global Stage

In 2018, Tuchel accepted the challenge of managing the footballing giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he took command of a star-studded squad featuring Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Edinson Cavani.

Tasked with delivering European glory, Tuchel’s tactical genius was on full display. He led PSG to back-to-back Ligue 1 titles (2018-19, 2019-20) and swept domestic competitions.

His crowning achievement at PSG came in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League, where he guided the club to their first-ever final, a historic milestone that etched his name into the annals of Parisian football.

Although they fell short to Bayern Munich in the final, Tuchel’s tactical mastery and leadership were widely praised.

His exit from PSG in December 2020, due to disagreements with the board, could not overshadow the legacy he left behind.

Chelsea (2021–2022): Conquering Europe

In January 2021, Tuchel was called upon to restore the fortunes of Chelsea, a club in turmoil under Frank Lampard.

In an astonishingly short time, Tuchel engineered a dramatic turnaround, solidifying Chelsea’s defence and creating a resilient, tactically-astute team.

His genius culminated in Chelsea’s triumph in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League, where they defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the final, securing Tuchel’s place among the elite managers of world football.

Tuchel’s success at Chelsea extended beyond Europe, as he guided the club to victories in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.

His ability to unify and inspire his squad in such a short period was nothing short of remarkable.

Although he was surprisingly dismissed in September 2022, his legacy at Stamford Bridge remains one of brilliance and tactical sophistication.

Bayern Munich (2023–June 2024): A Return to German Dominance

In March 2023, Tuchel took the helm of Bayern Munich, a club synonymous with domestic and European success.

He replaced Julian Nagelsmann and, in his first months in charge, delivered yet another Bundesliga title.

Tuchel, however, left Bayern Munich at the end of the 2023/24 season as part of "a sporting realignment" at the German club.

He is a master of adapting his systems to the strengths of his players, often deploying different formations such as the 3-4-2-1, 4-3-3, and 4-2-3-1.

His philosophy is built on pressing, positional play and fluidity - but above all, Tuchel is known for his meticulous attention to detail and his willingness to evolve.

His ability to unlock potential in players - whether established stars or emerging talents - sets him apart.

Tuchel is relentless in his pursuit of excellence, often seeking perfection in every aspect of the game.

Legacy: A Visionary of Modern Football

Thomas Tuchel’s career is a testament to the power of resilience, intellect and an unwavering belief in the game.

From Mainz to Bayern Munich and now to England, he has consistently defied expectations and redefined what is possible for a football manager.

His legacy is one of tactical genius, innovation and a profound impact on the modern game.

Tuchel stands as one of the true architects of football's future, a mind that continues to shape and inspire the global stage.

And now we shall see if he can go one step further than Gareth Southgate and deliver some silverware for the Football Association trophy cabinet.
