F1 news: Sergio Perez sees a ‘bright future’ after penning new Red Bull deal

Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez feels he has a ‘bright future’ at Red Bull Racing having signed a two-year contract extension with the F1 giants.

The Mexican joined Red Bull in 2021 and although he has always played second fiddle to defending champion Max Verstappen, the pair have a harmonious relationship.

Perez finished second on 285 points in the 2023 F1 drivers’ standings, securing a one-two for Red Bull after Verstappen racked up an incredible 575 points following a dominant season.

The 34-year-old is fifth in the 2024 standings ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix - but only trails Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc by 31 points, and is delighted to secure his future until 2026.

Perez, who has won five Grands Prix while at Red Bull, told the press: "I am delighted to be staying here to continue our journey together and contribute to this team's great history for two more years.

"Being part of the team is an immense challenge, and one I love. We have a great challenge this year and I have full trust in the whole team that the future is bright here and I am excited to be part of it."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who has secured Constructors’ Championships with Perez and Verstappen in the race seats, told the press: "Now is an important time to confirm our line-up for 2025 and we are very pleased to continue working together with Checo.

"Continuity and stability are important for the team and both Checo and Max are a successful and robust partnership, securing our first ever one-two finish for the team in the championship last year."

Here, Sports News Blitz takes a look at Perez’s career so far, with much more to come now he has secured two more seasons with Red Bull.

Early Adventures: Karting and Junior Formulae

Karting and Early Years: Once upon a time, a young Sergio Perez swapped his toy cars for go-karts. Little did anyone know, this was the start of an epic racing journey. By 14, while most of us were figuring out high school, Checo was mastering European race tracks.

Formula BMW: Like a caffeine-fueled teenager, Perez zoomed through the Formula BMW ADAC series, learning the ropes and giving everyone a run for their money.

British Formula 3: In British Formula 3, Perez decided to show everyone he meant business by winning the National Class in 2007. Why settle for second place when first is available?

GP2 Series: The Apprenticeship of Speed

Arden International: Checo joined the GP2 Series in 2009 with Arden International, finishing 12th, and ensuring everyone knew he was a contender, not just a participant.

Barwa Addax Team: By 2010, with Barwa Addax, Perez finished runner-up in the GP2 Series, proving he was ready for the big leagues.

Formula 1: The Big Show

Sauber (2011-2012): Checo made his F1 debut with Sauber in 2011, quickly earning his stripes and a few podiums. Malaysia 2012 saw him almost win the race, but second place was still pretty sweet.

McLaren (2013): Perez's move to McLaren in 2013 was like joining a rock band that's past its prime - great stories, but not many hits. One season later, he moved on.

Force India/Racing Point (2014-2020): Checo found a new home at Force India, later Racing Point, where he was like the team’s Swiss Army knife - reliable, versatile, and always there when you need a podium.

He even won his first race at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, proving he’s not just a sidekick.

Red Bull Racing (2021-present): Joining Red Bull Racing in 2021, Perez became the dynamic duo’s other half alongside Max Verstappen. His multiple podiums and wins have been key in helping Red Bull chase championships.

Notable Achievements

Race Wins: With multiple wins under his belt, including a thrilling victory at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Checo showed he's no one-hit wonder.

Podiums: Perez has collected podiums like a kid collects Pokemon cards, each one a testament to his skill in tire management and strategy.

First Mexican Race Winner: Becoming the first Mexican to win an F1 race since Pedro Rodríguez in 1970, Checo gave his fans plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Driving Style and Reputation: The Legend Grows

Racecraft: Checo is like the Jedi Master of racecraft, turning tricky situations into podium finishes with clever tire management that would make a Kwik Fit fitter jealous.

Consistency: His middle name might as well be "Reliable," as Perez consistently scores points and keeps his team in the championship hunt.

Personal Life: Behind the Helmet

Background: Born on January 26, 1990, in Guadalajara, Mexico, Checo hails from a family that believes in fast cars and faster drivers. His brother Antonio is also into racing.

Philanthropy: Off the track, Checo's a hero too. His foundation supports underprivileged kids in Mexico, making him a champion in life as well as in racing.

Future Prospects: The Road Ahead

With Red Bull Racing, Perez continues to be the charming rogue of the paddock, aiming for more wins, more podiums, and possibly a championship.

His experience and charisma make him a vital part of the team’s strategy and aspirations.
