Five-time Olympic medallist Gabby Thomas announces engagement to long-term partner Spencer McManes
Five-time Olympic medallist Gabby Thomas has some exciting personal news to share - and it’s not about her latest gold medal.
Sports News Blitz writer Shameeka Voyiya reports on the big news.
A surprise proposal
Following the attainment of her three Paris Olympic gold medals, US sprint star Gabby Thomas now has a new piece of metal worth bragging about.
The US sprint star recently announced her engagement to former collegiate athlete and now fiancé Spencer McManes in an interview with Vogue on Tuesday.
The three-time Olympic gold medallist got engaged during a staycation in Austin, Texas before her track season began, and according to Gabby, it was Spencer’s best-kept secret.
According to Vogue, he took her ring shopping during a Valentine’s Day baecation in New York City and later made a reservation at her favourite restaurant.
Gabby’s best friend and photographer watched as Spencer proposed to Gabby on the rooftop of an Airbnb.
“That's when I realized, ‘Oh my gosh, this is happening,” she told Vogue. “Normally he’s very bad with surprises - and this was the one surprise I think I've ever witnessed him keep.”
Gabby and Spencer have been together since 2022, having first connected on social media the year before over their shared love of pizza.
Gabby added, “Last season helped us solidify our relationship and work really well as a team through the ups and downs - we grew close through it.”
A champion on and off the track
Last year, Gabby seized three gold medals at the Paris Olympic games, winning gold in every event she competed in: the women’s 200m, the women’s 4x100m relay and the women’s 4x400m relay.
Her Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 games saw her win a bronze medal for the women’s 100m and a silver medal for the women’s 4x100m relay, solidifying her position as a force to be reckoned with in women’s track and field.
In February 2025, Gabby exclusively told Cosmopolitan about her post-Paris celebration with Spencer and the support he provided her during the summer Olympics.
“For me, personally, after I finished all of my races and did my media tour, I went on vacation with my boyfriend to the Maldives and it was the most relaxing, like holistic wellness, retreat. I needed to kind of go off the grid for a little bit,” she said at the time.
