Horse racing news: Cheltenham Festival 1/6 to start on ‘Good-to-Soft ground’

With an increasingly dry look to weather forecasts, William Hill think it looks very likely that the Cheltenham Festival will start on “Good-to-Soft” ground next Tuesday.

The market, which focuses on the official going description for the Day One opening race, the Michael O’Sullivan Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, currently has “Good-to-Soft” as the clear favourite at 1/6.

“Soft” is next in the betting at 4/1, with “Good” at 6/1 and “Heavy” a long shot at 50/1.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “With very little rain expected in the coming days, “Good-to-Soft” is the clear favourite at 1/6 to be the official going on Day One of the Cheltenham Festival.

“The forecast is strongly pointing towards “Good-to-Soft”, and we don’t expect much movement in the market unless we see a significant shift in weather patterns.

““Soft” ground is at 4/1 if the rain arrives but, with minimal showers expected, “Heavy” ground remains a distant 50/1.

“It’s also highly unlikely that ground staff will let conditions reach the point where racing would begin on “Good” ground, which is currently priced at 6/1.”
