Leeds Utd round-up: Dominant display, Daniel Farke rumours, Jose Mourinho link and more

Leeds United stunned Bristol City in a 4-0 win at Elland Road for the final home game before their return to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s hosts were on top form, with midfielder Ao Tanaka opening the scoring in the 21st minute.

The second half saw this electric performance continue, with Wilfried Gnonto giving the team another goal following a stunning pass from captain Ethan Ampadu.

Substitute Largie Ramazani added a third in the 82nd minute with his first touch of the game, and sealed the game off in style with a fourth goal in the final minute.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Maddie Newton outlines her analysis of the game and addresses some rumours around the manager’s position at the club.

The Mighty Whites

The intensity of the play throughout proves just how deserving Leeds are of promotion, maintaining 75% of possession and having a total of 22 shots compared to Bristol City’s three.

Leeds did not concede a goal from the opposition, marking a 25th clean sheet this season, showing the skill of both the defenders and goalkeepers.

The strength of the attacking players which Leeds offer has been emphasised, with the team scoring 10 goals in their last two games, including the 6-0 win against Stoke City on Easter Monday.

In Farke We Trust

The win could not have come at a better time for manager Farke, who has been the subject of much conversation following the confirmation that Leeds United will play Premier League football again next season.

Since Leeds have been promoted, there have been rumours about the board's trust in Farke’s coaching abilities at the highest level of English football.

Farke was appointed after Leeds were relegated at the end of the 2022/23 season based on his managerial record at Norwich.

While managing the Canaries, Farke won the Championship twice, securing promotion for them.

However, his time with Norwich in the Premier League was not as fortunate.

Under his management, the team were relegated both times, and have remained in the Championship since his departure.

The lack of funding he received from the board was a prominent factor in his failure at the club.

Rumours about his stability are circling, with many stating the management behind Leeds United are considering replacing him to ensure their safety next season.

Some sources have even linked the team with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Despite the rumours, the crowd at Elland Road were loud in chanting his name, implying they would be happy to see the manager stay.

“Don’t you know, pump it up…”

As it was the last game at Elland Road this season, the club had gone all out in ensuring the home crowd could celebrate promotion in style.

Every seat held a scarf with lyrics from the club’s anthem ‘Marching On Together’ - “At least until the world stops going round.”

Throughout the match and celebrations, Elland Road formed a yellow wall, reminiscent of the fortress the stadium has been this season, both in performances and atmosphere.

Fans were urged to stay behind after the game, where the players returned for a lap of honour, and popped champagne and confetti cannons to celebrate the achievement.

It was the perfect celebration before the final game against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, where Leeds aim to confirm their position as the winners of the Championship.
