MMA news: Conor McGregor’s potential UFC return met with ridicule

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor teased his return to the UFC during a post-fight press conference at the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship last week.

When asked about a potential comeback, McGregor made it clear that he has other interests right now and is content with his legacy in the Octagon, but he did not deny the possibility.

Although his comments sparked a frenzied debate amongst fans, the idea of McGregor’s return was ridiculed by UFC legends.

UFC legends ridicule potential return

McGregor’s comments were discussed on the latest episode of the Good Guy / Bad Guy podcast, a show hosted by UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen.

The pair discussed the feasibility of McGregor’s return, especially in light of his apparent desire to become the next president of Ireland.

“Sadly, I’m finally ready to say it’s over,” said Cormier.

“What part of it would he come back for? We’re told by him that he doesn’t need the money. We can see that his time is occupied,” added Sonnen.

“He’s got a beating standing in front of him. We can go 55, we can go 70, we can make up a weight class – there is not an athlete under contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship located in Southern Nevada that he can beat.”

Sonnen continued: “When they bring him back, they put him in a main event. You put a guy in a main event, all of a sudden you’re asking him to do five rounds. We’ve got a guy that can’t breathe for a full round, this is just the reality. There is nothing to come back for.”

What should McGregor do next?

McGregor has not fought since losing to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy fight back in July 2021, when the Irishman famously broke his leg.

As time goes by, one wonders whether there is any point in a UFC return for McGregor.

After all, it is clear that the 36-year-old’s time in the upper echelons of the sport is over after such a long lay-off.

The UFC is typically an avenue for the best to fight the best – a place where contenders become champions – and 2025 McGregor simply does not fit into such a category.

At this stage in his career, McGregor should either stick to fighting in BKFC promotional events or enter the world of ‘influencer boxing’, where the opponents are less experienced and the paychecks are large.
