MMA news: ‘I just knew I was going to break him!’ Sean Brady recaps his dominant win over Leon Edwards

Sean Brady has shaken up the welterweight division with his victory over Leon Edwards at UFC London.

Sports News Blitz writer Niall Togher breaks down the dominant performance that has put Brady on the fast track to UFC stardom.

Brady Silences Doubters with Stunning Submission Win

Going into the UFC London main event on Saturday, every hardcore MMA fan knew that Sean Brady was good.

Still, it’s fair to say that no one knew he was that good after the American dominated the former champion Leon Edwards before submitting him in the fourth round.

Many had written Brady off and dismissed him as a legitimate contender in the welterweight division after his TKO loss to Belal Muhammad in 2022.

Since then, Brady has won three fights and is currently ranked as the number-one contender in the division.

In a recent interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Brady was asked whether the fight was more one-sided than even he would’ve anticipated beforehand.

“It just goes to show how good I really am,” the 32-year-old said.

“I knew I was going to go out there and even if I can’t get this guy down, I’m going to make this a f*cking fight!

“I’m going to win no matter what, I’m going to do what I have to do, and I think he (Leon Edwards) underestimated me a lot.

“I remember punching him right in his face, right off the beginning and he made a face, I’m like, ‘Yeah! I’m not just here to hump your leg.’

“Especially when I got him on the ground too, I was hitting him hard and I just saw him diminish in front of me and my coaches were telling me the whole time, ‘Go forward’.

“When I was looking at him in the corner, he already had his head down.

“We’ve seen him do that sh*t before, his coaches are trying to pull those bullsh*t speeches and it f***ing wasn’t working and I just knew I was going to break him.” Brady said.

Lingering tensions after fight night

Typically, Brady's fight weeks are very straightforward. He’s a respectful athlete there for competition.

However, Brady revealed how the disrespectful antics of Leon Edwards made this fight more personal for him.

“I didn’t have social media, so I didn’t see his interviews, but I saw him saying that he walked up at The O2, he didn’t know where I was because I was so short, so I posted a picture of me on top of him, mauling him just laughing.

“I’m respectful, GSP’s my favourite fighter, always respected guys but when you’re an assh*le like that, I can give it right back.

“So personally f**k Leon, f**k him and his whole team and that’s how I feel about the whole situation,” Brady said.

Who’s next for Brady?

With such a dominant performance and being the first man ever to submit Edwards in MMA, there are plenty of options for Brady regarding his next fight.

Whether that be a title fight or one more in the meantime to further state his case for a shot at UFC gold.

The Philadelphia native revealed that he will be in attendance in Montreal for the upcoming title fight between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 in May.

“I would be interested in the loser of the title fight, I’d be interested in the winner of the title fight, or I’d be interested in Shavkat [Rakhmonov]. I think those options make the most sense,” Brady said.

Whether it is a title fight for Brady next or another fight against a top contender to secure his title shot, the American could be on course to be one of the breakout fighters in 2025.
