NBA news: Mavericks trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis in sensational deal with Lakers
The Dallas Mavericks have opted to trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis in a sensational deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.
As part of the blockbuster agreement, Dallas will also send Maxi Kleiber and Markieff Morris to California, while a 2029 first-round pick and Max Christie are to move the other way.
Attention now shifts to February 25 when the Lakers host the Mavericks in what is suddenly a must-watch game.
Sport News Blitz writer Christian Willis reports on the story.
Doncic to be LeBron’s heir at Lakers
It has been a decidedly inconsistent year for the Lakers, who currently sit fifth in the Western Conference.
That said, the franchise have won eight of their last 10 games, with veteran star LeBron James recording a triple double of 33 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds last time out against the New York Knicks.
However, James’ impressive haul was swiftly overshadowed by breaking news of the Doncic-Davis trade.
At the age of 25, Doncic is already considered one of the best players in the NBA, and his arrival immediately makes the Lakers serious title contenders.
The Slovenian – who is averaging nearly a triple double per game (28 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 7.8 APG) this season – will slot into the point-guard position and provide the Lakers with an attacking threat, consistent points, and the creativity to match.
With LeBron now 40 and on the way out, Doncic is primed to take up his mantle as the long-term focal point of a star-studded Lakers team.

Mavericks entrust Davis with championship hopes
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Mavericks offered up five-time NBA All-Star Doncic for trade after growing tired of his lack of conditioning.
With Doncic having been the key factor in Dallas reaching the 2024 NBA finals, the decision has left many in the basketball world perplexed.
Knicks star Jalen Brunson joked that it must be an early April Fools’ Day prank, while the Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton simply posted ‘Shams got hacked?’
The Mavericks are seemingly using the trade as an opportunity to reinforce their defensive set-up ahead of the play-offs.
As a nine-time NBA All-Star and five-time NBA All-Defensive Team player, Anthony Davis certainly provides a boost in that regard.
Although a pairing of Davis and Kyrie Irving promises to be particularly intriguing, one cannot shake the feeling that the Mavericks are throwing away long-term prospects for the short-term goal of competing for the championship.
In the end, only an NBA title will validate such a bold trade decision, and even then it may not be enough.
