Sponsorship news: Greyton Roses collapse in home loss to Bayview Overberg

The Sports News Blitz–sponsored Greyton Roses suffered a gut-wrenching 3-2 reverse to Bayview Overberg in their HollywoodBets Regional League clash at Uitkyk on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Trevor Kramer picks through the bones of a tough home defeat.

Injury-plagued Greyton brave in defeat

The Reds took a fourth-minute lead through a superb 25-yard Desmond Madondolo free-kick before quickly doubling their advantage as Kiaan Louw snuck in ahead of Bayview goalkeeper Hlomla Masenyulawa to steer home from the edge of the area.

However, a Fashheeq Griffiths penalty for a handball in the last minute of the first half and two second-half goals, from Benjamin Addoo and Gladwin Petersen, sealed a come-from-behind win for the visiting team.

The result was hard to take for the Roses but not overly unexpected as the hosts were once again forced into some drastic changes.

Midfielder Thabiso Mangana took up his place between the poles for the second week running after an outstanding showing in the 0-0 draw with Botrivier the week before.

Striker Wayne Sampson was, meanwhile, redeployed in the centre of defence following his Man of the Match showing last time out as winger Rex Tchodola made his stand at right-back.

Hosts take the lead in lively first half

Despite the personnel changes, the Roses started well, with Madondolo curling home his free-kick just minutes into the match.

There was a heart-in-mouth moment a minute later, though, as a mix-up in defence allowed Griffiths to get a shot away, but Mangana made a superb low save to his right.

Roses went further ahead with nine minutes on the clock when Louw reacted quickest to a square ball played across the 18-yard area by striker Fabian Steyn to nick home past Masenyulawa.

Bayview made a goalkeeper change after the second goal, with the more experienced Taaseen Hendricks taking Masenyulawa’s place between the poles.

The home side continued to attack, and another good Madondolo free-kick had to be hacked clear during a melee in the box, while Steyn inexplicably fired over from close range after a neat one-two with attacking midfielder Francisco Kandiado.

Mangana then saved a 30th-minute shot with his chest before falling on the loose ball as Bayview looked for a response. Kandiado rifled a cracker of a shot off the Bayview post after a neat one-two with Steyn to show that the Roses were not done either.

Unfortunately, for all the Roses’ good work, the half ended with Bayview reducing the deficit from the penalty spot in the dying seconds after Sampson was adjudged to have handed the ball in the box.

Second-half implosion hands visitors the points

Neither side made any changes at the break, but it was Bayview who imposed themselves at the start of the second period when Addoo got on the end of a long ball over the Roses defence to bury a well-hit shot past an outstretched Mangana, levelling up the scores in the process.

The Roses responded with Eduardo Chikufenji steering a diving header just past the post after another good Madondolo free-kick and Steyn's header towards the top corner of the goal, from a Kandiado chipped pass, being well saved by Hendricks.

Bayview subsequently took the lead on the hour mark from a needlessly awarded free-kick on the edge of the box that was slammed home by Petersen following Luke Philander's fierce delivery.

Lawrence Sibanda and Casper Maphosa were introduced for Alfred Kinkadi and Louw as the Roses looked to find a way back into the game but – despite a few late second-half chances – it was Bayview who would emerge victorious.

Greyton are next in action at home to high-flying Standards FC on Sunday, with kick-off at 1pm.
