UCLA Bruins take first-ever top spot in USA Today women’s college basketball rankings

UCLA have secured the top ranking in the USA Today women’s college basketball coaches poll following an impressive start to the season.

The rising stars of women’s college basketball are in ominous form having recently dispatched the South Carolina Gamecocks, UT Martin Skyhawks, Fresno State Bulldogs, and Hawaii Rainbow Wahine.

After topping the Associated Press women’s basketball poll for the first time last week, the Bruins have now landed another prestigious honour.

Sports News Blitz writer Shameeka Voyiya reports on the story.

Tight poll reflects competition

For a second consecutive week, the USA Today poll was extremely close, indicating just how competitive women’s college basketball is at the moment.

In the end, the Bruins received 759 points to claim the No.1 ranking on the coaches poll for the first time in their history.

Previous poll leaders the UConn Huskies retained second place with 756 points, staying well ahead of the Texas Longhorns in third on 706.

Brilliant start to the season

By all accounts, the Bruins are proving themselves a force to be reckoned with this season.

Indeed, the 97-41 defeat of Fresno State on Saturday marked the fourth game this year in which they have scored at least 90 points.

UCLA then followed up that result with a 70-49 demolition of Hawaii on Sunday to make it an eight-game winning run.

The chance for a 9-0 streak will come this Sunday when they go up against the Washington Huskies in a mouth-watering Big Ten Conference clash.
