Whoopi Goldberg launches new all-women sports network
American actor and TV personality Whoopi Goldberg has officially announced the launch of the first-ever global women’s sports channel, All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN).
The network will eventually be available in 65 countries around the world.
Goldberg revealed her plans during a recent appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Here, Sports News Blitz’s Shameeka Voyiya reports on the exciting announcement.
AWSN to change the landscape of women’s sports
The landmark project has been 16 years in the making, with Goldberg aiming to empower young female athletes by showcasing the brilliance of women’s sports.
“It’ll be the home for live women’s sports from around the world. Everything from soccer, basketball, tennis, cricket, curling, you name it,” she said. “If a woman is playing it, we’re showing it.”
AWSN will feature some of the biggest leagues in the world including the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 Women’s Series.
The network has already launched in Asia and the Middle East, and it is scheduled to launch in the United States later this week.

Empowering the next generation of female athletes
“I wanted to do this because, ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always wanted to play sports,” Goldberg told Fallon. “My brother could play. He played baseball, he played softball, he played basketball. He played everything and they would say, ‘Oh, hi little girl.’
“It always pissed me off. So, for years, I’ve been talking to people and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could go around the world and start getting [involved with] young athletes in high school so that we can grow with them and grow up with them?’”
Co-founded by Goldberg and Jungo TV, AWSN promises to provide a platform for the representation, recognition, and celebration of female athletes.
The actor declared: “I feel like that will help us show that [when it comes to] athletics – when they’re done brilliantly – it doesn’t matter who’s doing it. We don’t really have that relationship to women’s sports.”
The network is set to broadcast both live and delayed sporting events, with plans to reach over two billion people worldwide.
