Autumn internationals 2024: Score predictions for England, Scotland and Wales

Scotland will be seeking some consistency when they face Australia this weekend, while Wales face more misery at the hands of South Africa.

Steve Borthwick’s England have impressed in flashes but failed to get over the finishing line in this autumn series on several occasions, and will be looking to put that right against Japan.

Here, Sports News Blitz’s rugby writer Barnaby van Hoeken gives his thoughts and score predictions for all three games.

Wales vs South Africa (Saturday, November 23, 5.40pm kick-off)

The meeting of two teams with very different feelings. Wales are very much in a dark place, while South Africa are closer to perfection.

Warren Gatland has changed his team again to give more of his squad minutes, as has Rasie Erasmus, who has now fielded 52 different players in 2024.

Wales could go the whole year without winning an international Test match, with their last victory coming against Georgia in the 2023 World Cup group stages.

South Africa, meanwhile, have only lost two games all year and will be looking to keep it that way.

With a 16-52 South African victory on their last visit to the Principality, it’s hard to argue against the same outcome.

Score prediction: Wales 5 South Africa 62

Scotland vs Australia (Sunday, November 24, 1.40pm kick-off)

A match of two teams who have had their fair share of inconsistency.

For Scotland, every year is ‘their year’ for the Six Nations - yet they fail to finish higher than third.

Australia, meanwhile, have a constant turnover of players either crossing codes or being rotated.

Here is a chance for both teams to achieve some consistency.

Which team will make the statement to the rest of world rugby? It could go either way.

Score prediction: Scotland 20 Australia 31

England v Japan (Sunday, November 24, 4.10pm kick-off)

A return to winning ways or more disappointment for England?

In a series where many questions have risen about the team, England have a shot of salvaging their series.

Or do they?

If England win, they meet expectations. If England lose, the debate about English rugby being in crisis tips towards ‘yes’.

While victories against the All Blacks and Springboks were not expected, both games showed England can go toe to toe with the best with their set-plays in attack and blitz in defence - yet struggle to win.

This is a narrative that has been apparent all year.

Victory was arguably expected against an inconsistent Australia team - but once again, England failed to get the job done.

Despite their poor form, England know how to execute a successful game plan against the Brave Blossoms, having won 52-17 earlier this year.

No matter the outcome, it has been a poor series for England.

Score prediction: England 42 Japan 19
