Golf news: We all start on even par, says US Open favourite Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler admits his game is ‘in a good place’ as he prepares for the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst, which runs from June 13-16.

The world No 1 is in fine form after narrowly beating Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin to secure a one-shot victory at the Memorial Tournament.

That was Scheffler’s fifth PGA tour title in eight starts, and he was unstoppable on his way to winning The Masters at Augusta, meaning most bookmakers have made him the clear favourite for the US Open, pricing him at around 3/1.

The 27-year-old is taking it all in his stride, though, telling the press: “Just because I'm the favourite next week, it doesn't really have any affect on my score.

"I think we all start at even par, if I remember correctly!

"It's a good place to be. I like how my game's feeling right now and I feel like I've been playing some good golf.

"Hopefully going into next week I'm going to stick to my game plan and prepare the way I usually would and get ready to go out and compete again on Thursday."

Talking of competing, defending champion Wyndham Clark will be hoping to be in the mix once again on final-round Sunday - but the bookies don’t rate his chances of repeating his win, rating him as a 60/1 shot for the title.

They think Rory McIlroy is more likely to push Scheffler down the final stretch, and have the Northern Irishman priced at 11/1, with Morikawa widely available at 14/1.

They all face an uphill task overhauling Scheffler, though, as he is brimming with confidence after a dominant start to 2024, which has seen him win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players, The Masters and the RBC Heritage.
