MMA news: Tom Aspinall talks about potential title unification bout vs Jon Jones
After Jon Jones made the first defence of his heavyweight title on Saturday when he finished Stipe Miocic with a spinning back kick to the body, all attention shifts to what is next for him.
In the build-up to UFC 309, Jones has hinted numerous times that his fight at Madison Square Garden could be the last time we see him in a UFC Octagon.
However, with his potential fight with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall quickly turning into the most-anticipated match-up in the sport, there is growing optimism that we could see this heavyweight clash in 2025.
Speaking on ‘The Ariel Helwani Show’, Aspinall revealed the one major advantage he feels he holds over Jones if the pair were to fight.
“As a fan of Jon Jones, one of Jon Jones’ biggest advantages that he has over everybody is that he’s a tape studier, as am I, a massive tape studier.
“I watch the opponents, my coaches watch the opponents, pick up on their tendencies, pick up on what they like and don’t like, what they’re good at, when they’re tired, what tires them out, how are they getting up off the bottom, how’s their defence when you throw this shot etcetera.

“He loves to study opponents like this. He has no chance of doing that with me because my average fight time is the shortest in UFC history at two minutes and two seconds over 10 fights and that’s something that keeps him up at night, that will keep him up at night for sure.
“I am a massive question mark for him. I know a lot of his game, he’s got a lot of Octagon time over a lot of years, and I’ve got next to nothing, next to no footage on me is out there of me doing anything apart from bouncing people’s heads off the canvas,” added Aspinall.
In his press conference in the immediate aftermath of UFC 309, Dana White insisted that he will get the fight done.
So with Aspinall and the UFC in, the ball is firmly in Jon Jones’ court to see if he wants to unify the UFC heavyweight championship.
