Players Championship news: ‘More complete’ Rory McIlroy sizzles in Sawgrass play-off

Rory McIlroy claimed he is now a ‘more complete player’ after securing his second Players Championship title at TPC Sawgrass on Monday.

Northern Ireland star McIlroy made it a St Patrick’s Day to remember by seeing off JJ Spaun in a play-off on the famous US course.

The tournament was delayed by thunderstorms on Sunday, and both McIlroy and Spaun finished on 12 under after four rounds, with a lack of daylight causing a fifth day of play.

Ryder Cup hero McIlroy had too much class in the three-hole play-off for Spaun, who shot a triple bogey on the 17th hole.

Second win at Sawgrass

McIlroy won the Sawgrass event in 2019, meaning this was his second taste of glory at the Players Championship, while also ensuring he pocketed the $4.5million first prize.

He told the press after his victory: "I left here a little disappointed last night that I didn't get it done in regulation.

“I reset, and I needed to go out and play some good golf today. It started with a great drive on 16 which set me up for an easy birdie.

"I've worked really hard. I feel like I'm a way more complete player than I was a few years ago. Even in conditions like this.

“I feel like I can play in all conditions and anything that comes my way. Really happy that I was able to get it done today."
